The Full Moon in Capricorn
The first Capricorn full moon of 2024 is happening on June 21/22 (depending on where you live) in the first decan of Capricorn at 1°07’. Full moons are all about releasing and reassessing, so having this full moon in an earth sign will create a potential for finding practical and realistic answers to our questions while navigating this transit. It’s important to favour options that are sustainable long-term over ones that bring us comfort in the moment.
In 36 Secrets, T. Susan Chang describes this decan as “reaching one end of a tether,” as Capricorn I marks the winter solstice, which is interesting considering that we will be having this full moon while the Sun is in the first decan of Cancer - the other side of the tether. We’re seeing a theme of duality coming up with this transit already, as the Cancer-Capricorn axis represents the shifting of seasons from temperate (fall/spring) to extreme (winter/summer). Such a shift requires adaptation, as we must find harmony between the opposing forces of the Sun and Moon during this transit. We can’t only operate from emotions or “vibes” like watery Cancer desires, but we also can’t operate in a solely stoic and methodical manner like Capricorn either; a compromise needs to be reached.
We can find this need to compromise further when we look at the rulers of the Capricorn I decan. With both Jupiter and Saturn ruling over this decan, it’s easy to imagine planets in this decan facing very big highs, and very big lows. When Jupiter wants to expand outwards, Saturn wants to hold on and constrict; the ultimate dance between the diurnal benefic and malefic. The decan rulers remind me a lot of the two paternal characters in Good Will Hunting, Professor Gerald Lambeau and Dr. Sean Maguire. Lambeau had a more rigid, traditional, and structural approach to solving Will’s problems, while Maguire had a more open-minded and emotion-centred approach. Both wanted the same things for Will Hunting, but they went about it in drastically opposing ways, much like Jupiter and Saturn in Capricorn I. What we come to find in both instances however, is that it was the tempering of both opposing perspectives that provided the information and confidence necessary to continue to better one’s life.
But how do we apply this to this transit? And how do we help address any revelations that come about during this time? In my opinion, the answers are found in the Cancer I decan. Hellenistic astrologer Kira Ryberg makes an excellent point in her Capricorn decans essay when she highlights the repetitive and tiring nature that the 2 of Pentacles illustrates in tarot. The person juggling the coins has an infinity sign around said coins, implying a never-ending loop of juggling, which isn’t sustainable long-term. No matter how much we want to just keep it pushing, it’s important to remember that rest and leisure time is also necessary; this is where the Cancer I decan comes in. Cancer I is represented by the 2 of Cups in tarot, which talks about connection and relationships as a whole, but also things like little pleasures and entering a softened mindset.
If you want to counteract the potential heaviness of the revelations this full moon brings, it might be useful to spend some time with your community and/or loved ones that support you, or to take a break and do something that brings you joy and a feeling of content. The themes that come up during this full moon will be echoing until the following full moon, which is also in Capricorn, so remain vigilant for repetitive scenarios and/or lessons that are coming up during this month. This Cancer-Capricorn axis will be worked on quite a bit in these following weeks, so make sure to look at where these houses are located in your chart to get an idea of what themes will be coming up for you.
